Architecture Tour + Visit Panoramapunkt

This architecture tour will take you on a journey through the modern architecture in the city center of Berlin; see, among other sights, Sony Centre, Daimler district, the diplomatic quarter, the government quarter and Friedrichstrasse.

Today, in the twenty-first year after the fall of the wall, Berlin is still the largest construction site in Europe. The city is, however, also a great deal more than that, and now fulfils its role as the capital of a reunited Germany in a manner that should make you think it has always been that way. Within less than a decade whole city districts have been restored, rebuild, or erected. A most astonishing change has taken place. Berlin is more than ever worth a journey. A selection of the new buildings that by now have been completed in the city centre of Berlin is presented by this guided architecture tour.

The tour includes a visit to one of Berlin’s highest buildings; build by the architect Hans Kollhof. On top of the 88-meter high building is an observation platform with the most astonishing 360° views over the city centre.

After the wall fell (on November 9, 1989) a phase of urban development started. After the decision of the government to move from Bonn to reunited capital Berlin, Berlin calls for more dignified architecture that meets the highest expectations. The enormous volume of building and the diversity of constructions make Berlin a Mecca for architects, providing them with the opportunity of taking part in the creation of a European metropolis on the threshold of the 21st century, contrary to other capitals as Paris, London or Rome, whose appearance can hardly be changed.

Berlin still seems to permit architectural experiments in spite of the restrictions imposed by the protection of historical monuments.

What makes architecture in Berlin stand out is not least its constant effort to reconcile history with the present. Here, a new building is only considered successful if it shows consideration for older buildings, which sometimes have been given up for the sake of the new one, and if it doesn’t destroy their ‘aura’.
